DANGLING from a helicopter, his predecessors have staged incredible stunts to deliver chocolates to the women they loved.

Now, real life hero Cheshire firefighter Patrick McBride is taking over their adventurous mission.

The 39-year-old has been selected from more than 20,000 applicants to become the new Milk Tray man.

He appeared on the GMTV sofa this morning with Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid.

Over the next year he will don the elusive black polo neck to revive the famous TV escapades after an absence of 13 years.

Between the 1960s and 1990s Milk Tray men staged a series of ‘raids’ to surreptitiously surprise their sweethearts.

“I’m honoured to have been chosen to take on this iconic role,” said Patrick, whose wife of five years, Leanne nominated him.

“I still pinch myself every five minutes to realise this is really happening.

“I’m just loving every minute.”

Displaying bravery and courage in his every day job, Patrick has been a firefighter for 14 years.

He is no stranger to the screen.

“I’ve done a bit of TV extra work to fit in around my shifts,” said Patrick.

“Back in school I did a few stage productions.”

The caring family man, who has a young son, impressed judges with his down to earth heroic nature.

His predecessor James Coombes said: “I think Patrick is the ideal choice. He’s incredibly genuine.

“I’m very proud to be handing over my duties to him.”

The modern day hero is challenged to be thoughtful as well as adventurous.

Patrick added: “Rather than dive off a cliff or fight off a shark, my mission is to be thoughtful.

“It’s more about the message.

“I truly believe we do need to appreciate people a bit more.

“My favourite part of being a firefighter is visiting schools and being out in the community.”

Asked if he might now consider becoming an actor, he replied: “If something did come along that’d be great.

“Even if I’m hanging off a crane, I’ll still keep my feet on the ground.”
