THE northbound carriageway of the M6 between Holmes Chapel and Knutsford has now reopened following a complete closure on Wednesday morning.

Drivers were being urged to avoid M6 northbound from J18 at Holmes Chapel and J19 at Knutsford after and oil spill and unrelated lorry crash have resulted in the closure of the carriageway.

The northbound M6 was closed between Junction 18 and Junction 19 at Knutsford following the incident earlier today when it is believed a vehicle travelling up the M6 leaked engine or transmission oil onto lane one and lane two for almost eight miles.

The oil spill is unconnected to a collision between two lorries which led to a closure of the northbound M6 at junction 19 earlier today.  That incident was cleared at  about 9am.

The collision happened in roadworks at around 3.50am on Wednesday, February 10 at J19 of the M6 near Knutsford.

The lorries crashed into each other in lane one as two of the lanes were already closed for overnight road works.

The traffic is now backed up from J19 to J16 at Crewe.

Highways England traffic officers from the outstation at Knutsford are at Junction 18 with Cheshire Police helping to manage traffic.
