A NEGLECTED memorial in Crewe has been restored thanks to a heartfelt plea from a resident and the hard work of a community group.

The Railwaymen Memorial, located opposite West Street Christian Fellowship, honours the first pioneers of Crewe and the men of Crewe Works, but has in recent times become overgrown and uncared for.

Following a plea by a resident at a recent Crewe Town Council meeting, councillors set about finding partners to help undertake the renovation through the Vision for Crewe Community Plan networks.

Love Crewe, part of Churches Together in Crewe, quickly took up the challenge to spruce up the flower beds and lend some tending loving care to the memorial.

On Friday, May 27, a group of volunteers from Love Crewe and Crewe Town Council weeded, dug and planted the memorial beds and made them flourish once more thanks to gardening materials and plants donated by Wilkinson’s and B&Q in Crewe.

Cllr Jill Rhodes, ward member for Crewe South, said: “We would like to thank Love Crewe for helping to breathe new life into the Railwaymen Memorial and make it a really fitting tribute to our founding fathers.

“It’s great to see the community get involved in looking after the area in which they live and we hope this will be the first of many such projects.”
