ONE of the country’s largest volunteer organisations is on the lookout for members of the public to help out on wards at Leighton Hospital.

The Royal Voluntary Service (RVS), which aims to enrich the lives of older people, has more than 35,000 volunteers across the country.

Now, due to the success of the programme, the organisation has been asked to expand the service and cover an additional two areas.

Helen Backs, senior services assistant, said: “The expansion in service is wonderful news for RVS but, more importantly, it means that more patients and staff will benefit from the help of RVS volunteers.

“The befriending service our volunteers provide has a huge impact on patients. Volunteers provide practical and emotional support and help older people stay active and independent.

“It’s also the simple things, such as companionship, that can make a positive difference to a patient’s journey.”

The RVS provides a befriending service to patients on three wards at the hospital, which is managed by Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (MCHFT).

Cath Owens volunteers at Leighton Hospital twice a week.

She said: “It means a lot to give something back to the community, and it brings a wonderful sense of satisfaction to know that I’ve spent time making someone feel happy and comforted.”

Volunteers from the RVS also provide a buffet bar service in the outpatients area of Leighton Hospital, with all profits used to benefit the hospital.

Ken Fowles, one of the sixteen RVS volunteers already working at Leighton Hospital, said: “It’s a pleasure supporting patients.

“The biggest reward is when you’ve spent time with patients and they seem so happy and lifted.”
