AS part of Crewe and Nantwich U3A’s 21st birthday celebrations a members hired a train on the Llangollen Heritage Railway.

It was hauled by Great Western Railway steam locomotive No. 5199 from Llangollen to Corwen along the Dee valley while the party enjoyed a special buffet lunch served at their seat.

During the return journey there was a raffle with as many as 16 prizes which had been donated by local Crewe & Nantwich businesses.

Back in Llangollen many enjoyed a walk around the town and along the bank of the river Dee before the coach journey home.

A small group of enthusiasts had a conducted tour around the extensive Llangollen Railway workshops where a new steam locomotive, ‘The Unknown Warrior,’ is being built to commemorate the end of the First World War.

The generous contributions to the raffle and other proceeds from the excursion produced a total of £410, which is being donated to the Alzheimer’s Society.
