STUDENTS from the Sichuan area of China have travelled to Crewe to take part in a model United Nations summer school.
Over 70 pupils visited South Cheshire College in July to develop their knowledge and understanding of the UN while improving their English language skills.
Students were taught about the history, purposes and principles of the organisation, before practising their negotiating and debating skills in the model UN.
During their free time the students visited iconic British landmarks, including Stonehenge, London, Liverpool and Old Trafford football ground, while a trip to North Wales was a first seaside experience for many of the visitors.
Yvette Robinson, head of international at South Cheshire College, said: “This is the second year running that we’ve hosted the very successful model United Nations.
“The students commented on how much they had learnt about the world and in particular, the suffering that has taken place.
“The experience is so valuable for the young people coming to England – not only are they learning more about the UN and politics, but they get a chance to see and experience the country.”
Local families provided accommodation for the students and staff from China as part of the college’s homestay programme, which gives international students the chance to be integrated into British family life and culture.
