A PETITION calling for shops to be closed on Boxing Day to give retail workers a break has been backed by more than 100,000 people.

Ian Lapworth, a baker from Kettering, reportedly started the 'Stop Shops opening on Boxing Day' campaign a month ago calling for a return to a less commercialised festive season.

The petition adds: "Christmas is a family time, the one day is not enough time to see two sides of families.

"Retail workers work extremely hard during the Christmas run up and only get the one day.

"If only everywhere could be closed Boxing Day!

"Some things are needed over the festive period, retail isn't one of them."

The petition reached more than 100,000 signatures yesterday, Tuesday, which means it can now be considered for a parliamentary debate.

But while many have backed the petition, others have argued a potential ban on opening shops on Boxing Day should also be extended to restaurants to give waiters, waitresses and kitchen staff a break too.
