D-DAY war hero Philip Taylor is being remembered at a new housing development in Crewe.

A street at Bloor Homes’ Saxon Gate development off Parkers Road has been named Philip Taylor Drive, in memory of the army veteran who served in the Second World War.

Philip, a member of the Cheshire Anti-Tank Regiment, took part in the D-Day Normandy landings and also served in Belgium, France, Jerusalem and Cairo.

He died in January 2014 at the age of 91.

His son Mark Taylor, 54, of Beckford Close, Crewe, was overjoyed when he discovered his dad was having a street named in his honour.

He said: “It was a real surprise when I heard my dad was being honoured in this way.

“I received a phone call out the blue from Cheshire East Council asking for my permission to use my dad’s name and was truly honoured.”

The sign bearing his father’s name has now been installed, but construction work is still being carried out on that part of the development.

Mark added: “I am hoping I will be able to officially open the street. It will be a great privilege for me and a big thing for the whole family.

“My dad was very proud to serve as part of the Cheshire Anti-Tank regiment.

“We are thrilled that dad’s name will live on and hope it will encourage the whole community to take pride in the regiment.”

Tina Avis-Edwards, regional sales director at Bloor Homes North West, said: “It’s so important to remember the huge sacrifices of past generations and we feel very privileged that a local war hero is being honoured at our Saxon Gate development.

“We were delighted to welcome Philip’s son Mark down to the site to see the new sign, and we are looking forward to seeing the first residents of Philip Taylor Drive move into their homes.”
