A CREWE care home has put on a party to celebrate one of its residents’ 100th birthday.

Residents, family members and staff at The Elms came together to mark Joan Bristow’s special occasion, with the lifelong George Formby fan even treated to a ukulele-playing tribute act.

The home was decorated with balloons and banners, and guests enjoyed a specially-made centenary cake.

Joan’s most prized gift was a 100th birthday card from The Queen.

The party was organised by care home staff, who say this kind of event is what helps nurture the Minister Care Group-operated home’s community spirit.

Julie Parkinson, activities coordinator at The Elms, said: “It was lovely to celebrate Joan’s 100th birthday milestone as she’s such a characterful resident.

“The party was a very special day for everyone here at The Elms.

“Occasions like this really bring the residents together.

“It’s an example of how we organise activities to create a sense of community and deliver a person-centred approach to care, which means providing care based on residents’ individual needs.”

Joan was born in Penketh in 1917, and attended junior school in the area before going to Wade Deacon Grammar School in Widnes.

She supported the war effort during World War II, working in the offices of a firm that made wire rope for the army.

With two daughters and six grandchildren, Joan says the secrets to her long life are keeping busy and indulging in her favourite foods, such as chocolate – but only in moderation.

The residential home, in Elm Drive, is one of 60 across the country operated by Minster Care Group.

The family-run care provide says it is dedicated to providing ‘a safe and stimulating environment for older people, where independence and quality of life are maximised’.
