TWO men have died following a crane collapse in Dunwoody Way, police have confirmed.

Officers were called to a new build site near Morrisons at 4.30pm on Wednesday, June 21, following reports of a collapsed crane.

Firefighters were called to assist police and paramedics at the crane where three people were trapped.

Police have since confirmed that two men have died following the incident, while one man was taken to Royal Stoke Hospital with serious injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.

Next of kin have been informed but formal identification is yet to have taken place.

Chf Supt Matt Welsted said: “This is a truly tragic incident, and our deepest condolences go out to the families affected at this extremely difficult time.

“This is a multi-agency operation and we are working closely with the health and safety executive, local authority, and building control to establish the full circumstances of the incident, however I would like to reassure members of the public that nobody else is at risk.

“A residential property has been damaged as a result of the incident, the occupants were not injured and were checked over by medical professionals. They have since been relocated while the investigation continues.

“The bodies of those who have sadly lost their lives will shortly be recovered from the scene. I would ask that anybody who may have any footage of the scene, to please respect the families of those involved.

"Any footage that you believe could help officers with their enquiries, please send to our public contact email to allow us to effectively investigate the incident."

Firefighters released one casualty, a man believed to be the crane driver, who was taken to hospital by air ambulance.

One fire engine from Crewe and one from Winsford attended the scene along with the major incident unit from Winsford.

The emergency services were first called to the scene at 4.30pm.

Cheshire Police confirmed this morning, June 22, that Dunwoody Way remains closed to vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists in both directions from the Morrisons roundabout to West Street.

Both of the casualties were taken from the site around 12am and fire crews left the scene at 12.30am.

North West Ambulance Service also took a parent and child to hospital as a precaution after the crane had damaged their house.

Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to call Cheshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 611 of June 21.
