A TASKFORCE has been set up to attract a new university to Crewe.

A higher education vision document – which sets out the future opportunities that Crewe has to offer a new higher education provider – has been created by the Cheshire East Council taskforce.

The brochure will be used to attract a university to the Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) site, on Crewe Road, after university bosses decided to close its Crewe campus.

The campus will close in the summer of 2019.

The vision document sets out how Crewe’s economy, which is already performing as one of the best in the country outside London, and current conversations about the proposed HS2 high-speed rail hub station in Crewe, offer significant opportunities for economic growth and unrivalled connectivity in east Cheshire.

Along with future transport links, university providers would also have access to the strong, existing links with global and local businesses – along with high-growth small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs).

The taskforce is seeking a higher education partner who can help the area maximise productivity, research, innovation and degree apprenticeships in particular.

Cllr Rachel Bailey, leader of Cheshire East Council, said: “This authority understands the important role of higher education to help realise the economic potential of Cheshire East and help all our young people reach their own potential.

“This is why we established the Higher Education Taskforce.

“There is significant appetite from the taskforce and wider partners to collaborate with higher education and support a new offer coming to Crewe.

“We have developed the vision for higher education in Cheshire East with our local business base and future economic needs firmly in mind.

“This vision document sets out the fantastic opportunities on offer, should a higher education provider wish to be part of the development in Crewe.”
