A NANTWICH dad has raised hundreds of pounds for charity by cycling 150 miles coast-to-coast.

Roger Hill, 45, completed the punishing ride across England in one day to raise funds for Caudwell Children.

The Nantwich Cycling Group member decided to take on the challenge after his 18-year-old daughter Clare, who volunteers for the charity, told him about the work it does in providing practical and emotional support to disabled children and their families

“When Clare explained to me what they do I felt compelled to raise money for them,” he said.

“Without their help thousands of children across the UK wouldn’t get the support that they need and deserve.”

Roger, who regularly cycles 150 a week, had to put in extra training from January to prepare for the challenge of a 13,000 ft ascent during the coast-to-coast ride.

He took part in the Forest of Bowland, Tour De Yorkshire and Dougie Mac events before the challenge, but his preparation was rocked when a gust of wind broke a part of his bike – and led to him using a new one.

He said: “I needed a part for it and, unfortunately, the suppliers put the wrong post code on the package. As a result it didn’t get it back in time for me to fit it to the bike.

“It was extremely tough on a bike that I had never ridden before, and it made it a much bigger challenge.”

Clare added: “The charity is very close to my heart and my time volunteering there has helped me to understand just how vital that charity’s support is for disabled children.

“I know that every peddle-pumping pound he’s raised will go directly to the children that the charity supports.”

Roger raised an initial £751 for the charity, but with money still being added to his effort the total now stands at more than £800.
