THE mayor of Crewe joined Samaritans volunteers this week as it launched a campaign to listen to others.

Cllr Diane Yates dropped in to Crewe Station with Samaritans of south Cheshire and Virgin Trains staff on Monday, July 24, to raise awareness of the organisation’s work.

She praised the ‘tremendous’ work of the Samaritans, which is pushing the message that good listening is essential in bringing down the number of suicides.

“The Samaritans really listen to people when it is absolutely vital and help find a way through their problems,” she said.

“The work that they do alongside organisations such as Virgin Trains is amazing and helps people to seek help at an early stage.”

Every six seconds, someone in the United Kingdom and Ireland contacts the Samaritans for help, while every 90 minutes someone takes their own life.

To improve listening skills, the Samaritans offers advice on having the patience and courage to understand a person’s concerns.

Mel Robinson, director at Samaritans of south Cheshire, said: “Suicide is everybody’s business and we can all do our bit to encourage people to be better listeners and reach out for help if they need to.

“We’re a culture of people who love to give advice, love to give opinions and love the sound of our own voices. But this year we’re asking people all over the country to take time out to listen to others.

“Sixty years of Samaritans’ expertise has taught us that just listening is the greatest gift you can give to somebody, and that it can save lives.”
