A 42-YEAR-OLD woman is taking on the Great Wall of China trek to raise funds for Mid Cheshire Hospitals Charity.

Sarah Johnson, from Sandbach, decided to undertake the challenge for the Macmillan Cancer Unit at Leighton Hospital, which is currently raising funds towards a privacy pod for its reception area

In preparation for her challenge, Sarah has already completed a walk from Crewe to Manchester in memory of Nell Jones, one of the victims of the Manchester Arena bombing.

Sarah’s next walk warm up will be a 177-mile walk from Crewe to Sunderland in aid of the Bradley Lowrey Foundation.

She will then take on the Great Wall Trek with Global Adventure Challenges in October.

Sarah said: “I decided to do this trek to challenge myself to the extreme. I hate heights and will be travelling alone until I meet up with the rest of the team.

“A couple of years ago, I spent a lot of time with someone who slowly passed away over a few months through cancer.

“I vowed then to try to at least offer some comfort to others experiencing something similar.”

Stretching for 6,000km the Great Wall of China zig zags across China, over mountains and through valleys.

Sarah will undertake a seven day hike, including trekking over watch towers and mountains as well as other sights that are usually well off the tourist trail.

Trekkers will also have the opportunity of laying a brick in the newly-restored section of the Great Wall.

Carole Salmon, community fundraiser for Mid Cheshire Hospitals Charity, said: “We are so grateful to Sarah for choosing to take on this mammoth challenge in support of our Macmillan Unit and wish her all the very best the trek.”
