WISTASTON'S annual duck and boats race took place on Saturday, having been postponed a week earlier due to weather too wet even for water birds.

The 22nd community duck race and children's model boat race took place on September 16 at the Joey the Swan recreation ground, with the rose queen Jessica Doano and her attendant Elise Kennerley guests of honour.

Organised by the community council, the event drew in hundreds and saw 44 model boats entered into the race, with 640 plastic duck race tickets sold.

A Wistaston Community Council spokesman said: “This was our first attempt at organising the Duck Race, which has been a popular, community event for 22 years.

"We were able to follow the long-standing procedures from the past and thank, most sincerely, all the volunteers who made it a quacking success.

"We were pleased that it was a sunny day, following the wet postponement on September 9.

"We are so grateful to the sponsors - Wistonia Electrical & Security Ltd, the new Wistaston Co-op and Crewe Movie Makers.”

Proceeds will go to the funds of Wistaston Community Council, Wistaston Memorial Hall & Community Centre, and several charities.

The day also saw 15 stalls featuring charities and organisations, selling goods and advertising activities.

The best designed model boat won £10 and a trophy, with Natasha Nuttall winning £100 and a trophy following her Duck Race win.

There was also an enthusiastic commentary on both races by Dane Chaplow.
