THE leader of Crewe Town Council has welcomed an announcement that HS2 is about to move a step closer.

The HS2 Phase 2a Bill, which sets out the route from the midlands to Crewe, is due to have its second reading in Parliament on January 30.

Simon Yates, leader of the town council, said: "The consultations and legal processes around such a major project are quite rightly thorough and inevitably lengthy, but every stage on the way brings HS2 nearer to being a reality for Crewe.

"Better and faster connections to Birmingham, London, Manchester and the north will be a catalyst for jobs and prosperity in the town and the surrounding areas. Bring it on."

There will be a debate in the House of Commons to establish the principle of this part of the scheme.

The next step will be the appointment of a select committee to hear objections against the bill.

Those whose property or interests are affected by the bill will be able to petition against it.
