100 years ago

A FATALITY at Winnington Works in the early hours of Friday morning was the subject of an inquiry conducted by Mr H Yates, coroner at Victoria Infirmary on Monday.

Sarah Young, of Witton Street, said the deceased was her husband Abel, 33, a bricksetter labourer. He left to go to work on the night shift. At 6.40am the following morning she was told he had met with an accident and went to Victoria Infirmary but on arrival found he was dead.

The distance he fell to the bottom of the kiln was about 27 feet.

GUNNER George Hankey, whose mother lives at Shipbrook Road, has died of his wounds.

The 24-year-old enrolled in September 1914 and went to the front in 1915.

Prior to joining the Colours, he was employed at Foden’s Wagon Works in Sandbach. He leaves a wife and six-month-old daughter.

50 years ago

The 20 one-bedroom bungalows being constructed for Northwich Urban District Council on the Homestead site may be completed in December.

It was agreed that eight of the bungalows be allocated to tenants at present in larger accommodation, six to people from clearance areas and six to those on the waiting list.

AN autumn fair held by Sandiway and Cuddington British Legion women’s section raised £27 6s.

At the September meeting, Mrs Jones, of Weaverham branch, spoke of her visit to the USA.

A WINCHAM student has been awarded an honours degree in law from the University of Kent.

Katrina Marie Mack, 21, of Beechwood Drive, Wincham, begins a one year course at London Law School next month before joining a firm of solicitors as a trainee solicitor.

She is a former student of Rudheath High School and Sir John Deane’s Sixth Form College.

PREDICTIONS show that the population which stood at 114,800 in 1991 will shoot up to more than 122,500 in 2001 and could be as high as 136,000 in 2006.
