A SCHOOLGIRL has been chosen as the junior mayor of Winsford for the next year.

Mya Barlow, a pupil at Over St John's, was invested in a special ceremony at her school.

The 10-year-old has now received her robes and chain from town mayor Cllr Gina Lewis and has already been involved in a number of key events including the recent Salt Fair.

Mya was chosen to be junior mayor from more than 60 applications considered by the mayor.

In her letter Mya said that she wanted to help the mayor in carrying out her duties and help people in the town.

Town mayor Cllr Gina Lewis said: "It was a great little ceremony. We always try to make it as authentic as possible so that the youngsters can see what happens at a real mayor making ceremony.

"Mya really looked the part and I’m sure she will prove to be a great junior ambassador for Winsford.

"I was very impressed by Mya and her obvious commitment to helping others."

Head teacher Emma Snowdon said: "It’s an honour for a youngster from our school to be chosen as junior mayor.

"Mya is very excited and we look forward to supporting her in her role."
