FIONA Bruce is calling on the Government to let Chester Zoo open its doors 'as soon as possible'.
It comes as the much-loved Cheshire attraction is running an urgent appeal to keep it going after bosses warned it might not survive if the Government does not allow it to reopen soon.
The Conservative MP for Congleton, which includes Middlewich, has now raised constituents' concerns with the Secretary of State for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs around the decision for zoos to remain closed despite the easing of lockdown.
She is working with other Cheshire MPs to raise the issue, and the suggestion of sanctioning the safe reopening of outdoor spaces at he zoo – which covers more than 130 acres – similar to other sites such as Tatton Park.
"Chester Zoo is a cherished local asset," she said.
"Not only is it particularly valued by people who simply enjoy visiting, but it also provides essential conservation and educational work.
"As has been highlighted to me by my constituents, Chester Zoo has a great deal of outdoor space where social distancing can be maintained.
"I appreciate the Government support that has already been given to the sector.
"However – given the substantial cost to run Chester Zoo – I have, along with colleagues, impressed upon the Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs the need for the zoo to open as soon as possible, allowing visitors to continue to support the important conservation work it does."
Chester Zoo is the most visited zoo in the country and provides invaluable conservation work.
The zoo, opened in 1931, is a conservation and education charity, committed to preventing extinction.
