Gwyneth’s daughter aims to be next Crewe and Nantwich MP

GWYNETH Dunwoody's daughter, Tamsin, has been chosen by the Labour Party as its candidate to be Crewe and Nantwich's next MP.

She will now fight the May 22 by-election to try and take the seat her mother held for the last 34 years.

An intensive two-day selection process ended with Tamsin Dunwoody being chosen by the local Labour group at Pebble Brook School tonight.

About 60 applications were made for the candidacy and they were then narrowed down to a manageable shortlist of five with Tamsin Dunwoody emerging as a comfortable winner.

Born in Devon, Ms Dunwoody, aged 49, was educated at the Grey Coat Hospital and the University of Kent.

She served as a Labour member of the National Assembly for Wales representing the constituency of Preseli Pembrokeshire from May 2003.

In October 2005 she was appointed Deputy Minister for Environment, Planning and Countryside and Deputy Minister for Economic Development and Transport in the Welsh Assembly Government.

She trained in the National Health Service and worked in London hospitals for nearly 15 years.

She has also been an adviser to small businesses in west Wales.

Also contesting the by-election will be Edward Timpson (Conservative), Elizabeth Shenton (Liberal Democrat) and Mike Nattrass (United Kingdom Independence Party).

Tamsin Dunwoody is Labour candidate.
I am disgusted.
Family and party cynicism and collusion in expediting the selection and election process before the funeral.
Parachuting in a dynastic candiate with no connection to the area.
If the Tories did it they would be vilified.
This represents everyting that the Labour Party is supposed to be against.

I was present at tonight's selection meeting, and I can assure mark that Tamsin was chosen entirely on merit.

While the other candidates displayed a wealth of experience, passion and drive, Tamsin was consistently ahead.

It's time to decide how this by election is going to be run - I propose an entirely radical solution - everyone looks at the facts and listens to the arguments of each candidate and decide which one would best represent their direct and immediate concerns.

When you come to vote, democracy only works when you choose the candidate that you think can get the job done for you.

What do you think?

She is a failed Welsh assembly politician.
If her name had been anything other than Dunwoody she would not have had a chance. I do not see how that represents Labour's finest traditions.
With respect, I do not accept that any of that is absurd. It is fair comment.

The last 12 months have been a disater for this country - we need change.

The best person for Crewe would be omeone who understands the are. Edward, the Tory candidate would be best for this. He's from the area, and works in the area. He is also a co-ordinator in neighbouring Eddisbury. He has worked for his selection, and has so much to give, unlike Tamsin who has had her chance to shine in Politics (in Wales) but failed. The labour party are in a mess at the moment, and because of this they feel the only way they will win the by-election is if they parachute Tamsin in to get a sympathy vote. RIP Gwyneth.

Yet again the Labour Party treat us with contempt! Gwyneth Dunwoody did not live in Crewe and therefore did not experience the daily problems encountered by residents. It would appear they now wish to impose her daughter who would no doubt adopt a similar stance. I have also just been telephoned by the 'Local Labour Party' but the call was made from a North East (Tyneside) number by a lady with a Geordie accent - how local is that??? This should no longer be tolerated and we have an opportunity to send this message to Gordon Brown on 22 May.

I totally agree with the majority of the earlier comments. This decision is a total disgrace! Are we now to be known as 'Crewe-ba', when family members can just take over as they wish!!! Oh, I forgot, Gordon Brown ran a mile when it appeared he would get a hammering in a General Election so he stays as our unelected leader! I guess Thursday proved that he is, at least, correct about some things!

As much as I admired Gwyneth Dunwoody, I really do hope that Tamsin Dunwoody is beaten into third place, if only for the sake of democracy. I'm sure Gwyneth loved her daughter but I can't help feeling that she would have not been in favour of this selection.

It is totally cynical as others have said & shows that the Labour Party are really scared about losing this seat. I would imagine it is better to lose with dignity than win by this method but, hey, I am only a member of the moral majority! If Tamsin wins, the people of C&N will all be a laughing stock in parliament!

When my mother died and we were arranging her funeral, I wasn't in a fit state to run a bath, let alone try and stand for Parliament in HER SEAT. How can Tamsin do such a thing when her mother hasn't even been buried yet - she must have been plotting from the moment Gwyneth breathed her last. I thought Labour didn't believe in the hereditary principle......

I love this false rage from the Tories who are obviously rattled.

First of all they complain that the timing of the by-election is disrespectful, despite the family being happy with it. Now, they are trying to claim that Tamsin Dunwoody is someone who is callous.

She was a superb AM for Preseli. Those who say she was rejected, could say the same of her mother who lost Exeter in 1970. Those who say she has no connection with the area could have said the same about her mother in 1974. Yet any but the most mealy mouthed cannot deny that Gwyneth Dunwoody was an excellent constituency MP. That's why in 1983 Crewe & Nantwich was the only Labour Gain in the NW outside of Liverpool.

The Tories were caught doing this sort of thing in the Ealing Southall by-election even impersonating a Lib Dem councillor from Manchester (who is now a Labour member) and having him direct Lib Dem supporters to back the Tory.

As if. That sort of stuff was tracked back to a Tory fellow called Grant Shapps who then pretended his account had been hacked and that although he was an "IT Security expert" his password was 1234. As if.

I find it hard to believe that Crewe & Nantwich cannot produce a local candidate... or more to the point, the Labour Party doesn't believe (or trust) they can, and so therefore need to implant a 'worthy' outsider to save the seat.

Of course this choice is designed to benefit the party and NOT the people of C&N... shame on them, shame on the shambles that passes for a once great and decent political party.

I know the people of C&N well and I know how proud and genuine they are too... they will hate the idea of their constituency being stolen by the faceless Labour party apparatchiks from London. I'm so sorry that they are having this embarrassment forced upon them, I really am.

Just like Hilary Benn, son of Tony and over 100 MPs admit that they pay taxpayers money to employ family members, without advertising these vacancies fairly and openly to find the best candidate. Very cosy isn't it.

Secondly, do you think the Labour party would be stupid enough to select a candidate on hereditary merit alone at such a terrible time for it?! I wish her best of luck, and am confident she will endeavour for the best interests of the people of Crewe & Nantwich.

Gordon Brown is probably the worst post war prime minister we have suffered and he will do anything to cling on to power. Having lived in Crewe all my life (in Bristol at university) I have seen how Labour and Dunwoody have shown no interest in the lives of the working class. Instead they ship in some has been AM judged purely on name. Crewe and Nantwich need somebody with the local knowledge and interest to tackle what local people worry about: money in their pocket, crime, jobs, somewhere safe and clean for their children to grow up. Crewe (and the country) needs a change.

What I will admit to is that I have those things that are known as 'a mind of my own' & a sense of right & wrong. As for examining the e-mail addresses of all correspondents, Chris reveals himself to be an ideal companion to the same party that continues to erode civil liberties more than any past government of any political persuasion. From what I have read about Tamsin Dunwoody's comments about this debate, it seems she is hardly 'a chip off the old block' with an independent & moral outlook!

Most people, including myself, admired, respected & indeed voted for Gwyneth Dunwoody but what has transpired since her sad passing is just plain wrong. It surely says something that Miss Great Britain has more dignity than the local Labour selection committee (and whose candidate has the same connection to the area, ie none!).

As a side issue, Steve says that 'the Tories are rattled'. Hmmm, maybe we all dreamt Boris Johnson becoming London Mayor, Labour being beaten into third place nationally & locally, the results of the West & East Cheshire elections, etc, etc. I think his post has an obvious typo!!!

The Tories rattled???

Best local election results since the late sixties, highest opinion poll ratings in over 20 years, Winning the Mayor of London race, a local ICM poll conducted in Crewe predicting a 1,000 majority to the Tories... Hmmm the only thing that seems to be rattled from this is a Labour supporter trying to play devils advocate!

New Labour is growing rather old, we need a change. David Cameron has turned the Conservatives into an effective, respectable party fit for government. He doesn't make promises like Labour, he talks about action what he and his party aims to achieve...

Timpson is the only front runner who is local, he knows the area, understands the concerns - contrast this to Tamsin - not from the area, drafted in at the last minute to hopefully gain the seat purely on the name. Vote Locally, Vote Timpson!

I can assure the electorate of Crewe & Nantwich that this lady (far from being a failure)is simply "out of the top drawer". She has an excellent brain and is no push over.

It was no surprise to find she rose rapidly to Ministerial level.

I'm sorry Dick, but judging her record while campaigning in Crewe tells us all we need to know about Tamsin. This has been a supreme low with regards to honest decent electioneering. Even Labour's traditional supporters are distancing themselves from her campaign and so have the left-learning newspapers (who have all criticised her tactics).

If this is what she brings to the people of Crewe and Nantwich, I rather suspect they would sooner she return back home to Wales.

"Out of the top drawer" - yes, Gordon Brown's top drawer marked "emergency tactics" - the same drawer he pulled the abandonment of 10p tax from...

I feel sorry for all the Labour figures from the C&N area who could have stood as a LOCAL candidate.

It shows the true meaning of the Labour party are when they stoop to using class wars...

Yes, Edward Timpson comes from a privileged background - but so do many Labour figures - Tony Blair went to the best private school in Scotland... The Timpson family maybe well off, but they contributed to society in so many ways, such as fostering many children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Let us remember Heath, Major and Thatcher all hailed from working class backgrounds...

If you think it is right to discriminate against someone with a privileged background then you give the green light to do the same to someone from a not so good background. Labour have shown nothing but desperate, childish tactics in this by election, stemming mainly from poor leadership and no clear policy.

Gordon Brown himself won't be visiting the area - what does that say about a party if it's leader refuses to visit a constituency fighting a by election?

Tamsin was a tireless worker who made sure that anything you raised with her was immediately raised with the relevant person in the Assembly. Then she made sure they got back to you and followed up every issue.

You are really lucky to have the chance to vote for her.

If I lived in Crewe she would get my vote.

Tamsin has totally turned me off with her dirty campaign. She has no principles or honour and will clearly do or say anything to try to take my vote.

I don't care how much money Timpson's family have made (and being self made... good for them!) - why can't she focus instead on how she will help me? I have no idea where she stands on anything I really care about.

Something needs to change in this country - and that change needs to be a move forward, not back to the dark 1970s.

If the people of Wales rejected her from such a height, why would the people of C&N want a failed second-hand candidate to represent them?

I'm sorry, but Dunwoody's record appears to show she wasn't very good at her job... certainly nothing in her mother's league.

Fortunately, the voters do have a choice in C&N... either the local man Edward Timpson (Conservative) who's family has lived, worked and supported the local community for years. Or alternatively the impressive Liz Shenton (Liberal) who has also run a very decent campaign over the past couple of weeks.

The choice is yours... something new or just more of the same old tired reheated Government policies.

For the benefit of John Pickworth Tamsin did'nt lose her seat, the Wales Assembly Government lost it for her by coming out with not exactly the brightest idea to put before the electorate coming up to an Assembly Election i.e. a document for discussion on ideas for the reconfiguration of the NHS in Wales fit for the 21st century. The document was seized upon by the opposition in particular the Nationalist Party. Very soon rumours of Hospital closures or downgrading with consequent loss of services/staff affecting the west of Wales were rife.Utterly untrue but a momentum gathered. Public Meetings/Marches took place and the damage done became irreversible for Tamsin. But all this aside it is a constituency that traditionally swings back and forward Tory/Labour.
I say again, Tamsin was an excellent AM irrespective of her Party colours and certainly does not warrant the kind of rubbish thrown at her.

I really do hope that the people of C&N show the country that we are not swayed by such dirty tricks. As I stated in an earlier post, I feared we would be a laughing stock if Tamsin was voted in. However, after seeing & hearing her campaign, it would be FAR worse than that... it would make all local voters appear to be hate-filled, divisive, backward-thinking & stupid.

By all means, Tamsin, come to your late mother's memorial service in June but PLEASE do not stand in this constituency ever again, if you are (hopefully) defeated on Thursday.

Well it's all over now anyway - Timpson has more than likely got in - and he deserves it! Labour hate Conservative Cheshire so much so that they have just forced the county to split in two. The next stage for them is to merge West Ches. with Merseyside and East with Stoke or Manchester, thus diluting the Tory vote! This has upset Cheshire residents, and has no doubt had an effect on what party people vote for today!

Another post from somebody who lives miles away & doesn't understand the recent controversy in C&N. I think, Earl, that if you did live around here, you would certainly not think that Tamsin Dunwoody was 'decent'.

As for being 'bogus' or 'low mentality'... hmmm, well that neatly sums up the Labour campaign but not most of the well-reasoned posts on here!

I seriously doubt that these posts were from 'Tory infiltrators' - surely they had better things to do & anyway, haven't they won already???

I think that the proof of just how much rancour TD has produced is evident by how long this thread has been going. No other story has dominated for so long but hopefully Labour will not be so daft as to; a) resort to the same dirty tricks again & b) parachute somebody in from miles away on some flimsy pretext of having a connection to the local area.

Cheshire blues, in several ways I understand why you chose to vote out Labour, E.T, is local, he states he cares and his 'class' shouldn't make any difference, but you didn't just support G.D because she was a maverick, she delivered and still had the respect of the Labour party. Tory central is new and riding high on the wake of Blair's governing style, Cameron is a replicant, a soft edged bioengineered Blairite, so are his minions, and by voting for E.T all you are doing is condoning dull lifeless retortic. The truth is you didn't have an ounce of choice but you think you did, ain't that sad.

Sorry I am still ranting... Cameron is a hateful example of how distorted our governing body is, how it does little to represent the views and standards of the working masses, but maintains the standards of the well to do classes. The increasingly large proportion of incumbents are in place not because of their natural abilities but their learnt behaviour, and their inherited desire to provide for themselves at the expense of others and know there is very little the masses will or can do to stop them. Money buys position, education provides knowledge, control buys power, it looks like we invest on their behalf every time we think we have choice, because for them, whoever they are, every tick counts.
