A FORMER Motorbility expert who has lived in Middlewich for 35 years and a man who used to be a member of the Territorial Army are your Independent candidates for Middlewich in the upcoming Cheshire East election.

The public will be asked to choose who they want to represent them on the borough council on Thursday, May 4.

Across the borough, 254 candidates are vying for 82 seats, including three in Middlewich.

The council is currently run by a joint Labour and Independent administration after the Conservatives, who had been in control since the council was formed in 2009, lost their majority in 2019.

Independent councillors running in the 2023 election include Garnet Marshall and John Bird.

Garnet has lived in Middlewich for 35 years and is married with two grown-up children – both of whom went to the school in the town.

He is now retired after 30 years in the driver training and road safety industry, latterly as a consultant at The Transport Research Laboratory, (TRL).

Before retiring, he spent 10 years as a Motorbility specialist.

Garnet likes the thriving volunteer community working hard for Middlewich and says being a borough councillor will give him connections to be able to support the town.

John moved to Cheshire in 2008 and his children have all attended schools and colleges in the area.

In his younger years, he was a member of the Territorial Army, Parachute Regiment and Airborne Forces for nine years while working full time.

He has worked as a teacher and school leader since 1991.

He says his values include personal responsibility, integrity, and transparency.

John now wishes to take a proactive role as a borough councillor and make a difference to the town he has made his home.
