THE Salvation Army has launched an appeal to help put presents under trees this Christmas.

The Northwich branch of the charity is calling on the community to donate new toys to support families struggling to make ends meet this holiday season.

Last year, Northwich Salvation Army distributed gifts to more than 100 children and adults.

However, there are fears that even more people will be in need of support this year.

Salvation Army church leader Claire Marriott-Lodge said: “Helping a parent provide a gift for their child is more than just financial support, it brings the joy of Christmas into their home.

“We have seen the devastating effect of the cost-of-living crisis.

“People are really struggling and so we are doing what we can to relieve the pressure this Christmas.”

She added: “The Salvation Army’s present appeal is an opportunity for people in our communities to embrace the spirit of Christmas and give to families and individuals who have nothing.

“We have been humbled by the public’s generosity over the years and hope this year our appeal will be able to bring some comfort and joy to people who are struggling the most.”

The church on Tabley Street will be collecting donations of new and unwrapped toys as well as clothes, books, and toiletries until Friday, December 15.

Until December 8 they will also be collecting festive sweet treats and non-perishable food items to create hampers.

The gifts and hampers will then be distributed to children and families in the area through local groups, schools and social services.

Donations can be dropped off on Tuesdays and Fridays between 10am and midday.

Alternative arrangements can be made by calling the church on 01606 330572.

Donations can also be made within the travelator hall next to the entrance of Asda in Barons Quay or via The Entertainer’s Big Toy appeal between November 6 and 25.

There is also a JustGiving page for those who wish to make a financial donation.
