CREWE could be welcoming the Olympic stars of 2012 after being selected to appear in the official pre-training camp guide.

The brochure, which is currently being circulated at the Beijing games, features more than 600 elite sporting facilities from which athletes can choose to prepare for the London Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council has joined forces with Manchester Metropolitan University to form the MMU Cheshire East Consortium to promote the town’s facilities including the Cumberland Arena, BMX track, MMU student accommodation in Crewe and sports facilities in Alsager.

The guide offers extensive information about what the town has to offer in terms of sports training and leisure facilities.

Mayor of Crewe and Nantwich, Cllr Brian Silvester, said: “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the area to be recognised on the world stage.

“If successful the pre-training camps could attract high profile athletes and additional visitors into the area.”

The consortium now hopes to hear from countries interested in visiting the town during the Beijing Olympics or later in the year when the National Olympic Committees will be planning for the 2012 games in London.
