NEW planning rules come into force from Wednesday next week which mean that many extensions that have previously needed council permission can now be built without it.
However, some proposals which were previously ‘permitted development’ will now require planning permission, including, for example, all conservatories or rear extensions over three metres in length.
As well as new size limits for extensions and roof alterations, the new regulations prevent householders from installing driveways, parking areas and hard standings of more than five square metres in their front gardens, without planning permission.
New controls have also been introduced for balconies, verandas and decking.
Borough councillor Margaret Hollins said: "Whilst the new regulations are more liberal in some respects many other householder projects such as decking will now require planning permission. “I would therefore recommend that householders contact the Planning Department for advice before undertaking any building work."
