Folk star coming to festival

QUEEN of folk music Eliza Carthy is on her way to Words and Music next week.

It’s a big coup for Nantwich’s newest festival which takes place over four days starting next Thursday, October 9.

Since the age of 14, Eliza has performed and recorded with a startling array of musical heroes from around the globe including Joan Baez, Damon Albarn and Paul Weller. Twice nominated for a prestigious Nationwide Mercury Prize, she’s won more than five BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and has been a regular guest-presenter on the BBC Radio 2 Mark Radcliffe show.

Several appearances on Later with Jools Holland have followed.

Aiming to bring the very best in literature to the region, award-winning poet Don Paterson is also invited.

Described as one of the most talented poets of his generation, Don’s work is witty and distinctive, combining lyrical beauty with cutting edge relevance.

He’s won the Whitbread prize for Poetry, the T.S.Eliot prize and earlier this year was presented with an OBE.

BBC2 Radio DJ Mark Radcliffe will be reading from his new book and performing while BBC2 Radio DJ and former host of TV’s Whistle Test ‘Whispering’ Bob Harris and Festival Organiser Thea Gilmore are also on board.

Eliza Carthy is appearing at Malbank School Theatre on Saturday, October 11, at 7.30pm.

Tickets are £15.

Don Paterson is appearing at Nantwich Museum on Sunday, October 12, from 11.30am with tickets £10.
