Players Net More Awards At Drama Festivals

NANTWICH Players returned from recent drama festivals in Cheshire and Manchester, with four prestigious Awards.

Adjudicators visit plays held across Cheshire and the West Pennine region and make nominations in categories varying from best actor to best poster.

This year adjudicators saw a total of 83 plays and nominated the Players 27 times.

John Powell who directed Strangers on a Train was Best Director in the West Pennine Festival and Jerry Park who directed Once A Catholic, was given the same accolade in the Cheshire Theatre Guild.

The December production of A Christmas Carol was judged to have the best musical content in a drama while Sarah Hall was awarded most promising youngster for Lady Macbeth in the youth theatre production.

Sarah’s Award is particularly encouraging as it means that actors from the Players Youth Theatre have won ‘most promising’ or ‘best under 21’ awards for nine years in a row.

These Awards round off a hectic season for the Players in which they staged six plays, won the South Cheshire Visitors award and bought the building next door to the venue to extend the facilities.

Planning for next year’s season is almost complete and there is to be an open day at the Love Lane theatre on Saturday September 12.

The public will be invited to look round the converted Quaker Meeting House, built in 1724 and now housing a stage and an 82 seat auditorium.
