A NANTWICH fisherman has hung up his rod after more than 80 years and donated his equipment to young fishing enthusiasts.

Harold Worrall, of Nantwich, donated a rod, keep net and two chairs to the East Cheshire Emergency Services Fishing Competition, which takes place next month.

At 89, he is the oldest member of the Wyche Anglers, in Nantwich, and decided it was time to hang up his roads when he saw posters and newspaper articles about the youth contest.

He said, “It’s great to see events like this. So many youngsters get bored during the long summer holidays and fishing is a great sport when you get into it.”

Police Community Support Officer Nick Jarvis added: “This is a generous gift and we are grateful for it. Many of the young people are complete beginners at fishing, so having tackle for them to use is very important.

“The fishing contest provides a lot of fun for a large number of young people and gives them a chance to meet Police Officers, Police Community Support Officers, Fire Fighters and Ambulance Service staff in a really relaxed, informal atmosphere.”

The contest runs from August 17 to August 24 with three heats a day at locations across East Cheshire. The grand final will be at Gawsworth Fisheries on August 26. Information and entry forms are available on 01244 614446.
