WORLD class boxer Courtney Fry has been helping Crewe students to pack a real punch in the sport by delivering coaching sessions.
The training sessions have been organised through Cheshire East Council’s Sport Unlimited programme.
Commonwealth Games gold medalist Courtney has been helping to engage students in boxing and build up their fitness during the eight week programme at South Cheshire College.
The sessions have targeted students who don’t normally participate in sport from different courses through the college’s enrichment programme.
Enrichment enables students to try up to 60 different activities in addition to their day-to-day college courses which range from jewellery making and music to Spanish and sport.
Courtney has been putting the group through their paces and teaching them key boxing moves and manoeuvres, including how to punch, during the hour-long sessions in the college’s sports hall.
Courtney said: “I wasn’t too sure what to expect when I first came to the college because I was working with a number of students that hadn’t tried boxing before but I’ve been extremely impressed.
“Students have made a conscious effort to get fit and have been dedicated to learning more about boxing.
"Hopefully, this has given them an incentive to continue with the sport in the future.”
The Sport Unlimited programme aims to introduce young people to boxing and take up it up as a lifelong participation sport.
It is being run in conjunction with the Cheshire and Warrington Sports Partnership.
Many of the students who had no previous experience of boxing have gone from strength-to-strength in the sport and are looking to join boxing clubs locally and participate outside college.
Annabel Broad, 17, of Haslington, is studying a programme of A Levels at South Cheshire College.
She said: “I’ve seen a massive improvement in such a short space of time.
"As well as building up our fitness we’ve learnt different boxing techniques and how to punch.
“It has been fantastic learning about boxing from someone like Courtney who is a world-class boxer and has achieved such a lot in the sport.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed trying something new and the sessions have inspired me to carry on with boxing in my spare time.”
