Inspiring Book Launched In Sandbach

AN inspiring book of poems and short stories written by young adults with learning difficulties was launched last week.

Beyond Dreaming showcases the work of those who use day services centre Sandbach House.

They were encouraged to put pen to paper as part of a creative writing group.

And their poems and short stories received such a positive response when they were exhibited at libraries in Crewe, Alsager and Congleton that staff decided to publish them.

The volume includes a poem titled Images of Winter, which celebrates moments of joy found in a snowy day and a short story written from the viewpoint of a person observing their surroundings as they stroll through a busy park.

The book, which is non-profit making, features a foreword by former Cheshire Poet Laureate John Lindley and illustrations by local artist Andrew Turner.

Cheshire East Mayor Margaret Simon was among the guests invited to celebrate its launch at the Crewe Road centre on Monday.

Councillor Roland Domleo said: “Staff set up the creative writing group to enable service users with a broad spectrum of communication abilities to explore ways of expressing themselves through the written word.

“What began as an exploration of language has resulted in an inspiring collection of work which shows just what people with learning difficulties are capable of achieving, and hopefully challenges some negative stereotypes.

“It is a huge credit to the group that two professionals in their fields, John Lindley and Andrew Turner, have contributed to the book.

“My congratulations go to members of the group and staff alike – they have every reason to be proud of their achievements.”

For a copy of the book contact Peggy Stevens at Cheshire East Council’s Carter House on 01270 278485.

A minimum donation of £2 is requested to cover printing costs.
