FIREFIGHTERS from across Cheshire are fighting a blaze that gutted a church hall in Sandbach.
St Peter’s Church Hall in Elworth was devastated by fire last night(Monday), after firefighters battled for several hours to try to save the building.
Crews were called to the incident just after 11pm to a report of a fire at the hall on school lane.
One appliance from Sandbach, two from Crewe, one from Middlewich and one from Nantwich were mobilised.
Crews used six main jets to fight the fire from the ground due the threat of the building collapsing and the aerial appliance from Macclesfield was used to extinguish the blaze from above.
An Incident Command Unit from Northwich was also set up after the number of appliances rose above five. The Environmental Protection Unit from Ellesmere Port were also mobilised to deal with the water from the fire running into the drainage system.
Two appliances and an aerial appliance were still at the scene this morning damping down the partially collapsed building and firefighters are stripping away the roof tiles to gain access to the roof space below.
This work will continue until the fire is completely extinguished.
A fire investigation has been launched.
