POLICE believe a ‘restorative justice’ scheme has provided the ideal way of resolving some pre-Christmas disorder in Nantwich.
Five cars and a fence were damaged and people were woken up when four young men headed home in the early hours of December 19 after a night drinking.
On the evening of February 2, the four had a face-to-face meeting with police officers and agreed to pay more than £60 each in compensation to the owners of the cars and the fence.
They also wrote letters of apology to the owners and then went out on an hour-long litter pick in Nantwich town centre.
Sergeant David Jones said: “We had spoken to the victims and they agreed this was the way to settle the issue.
“Most of the damage was caused by the lads pushing one another about and they were genuinely ashamed of the way they had behaved.
“The litter pick seemed a good way for them to acknowledge publicly that they were wrong and it provided some benefit for the community.
“We only use Restorative Justice in cases where we believe it is the best course for everyone involved. On those occasions it is really effective.”
The rowdy behaviour by the four men occurred along Birchin Lane, Mount Drive, Mount Close, Millstone Lane and Park View.
