POLICE have welcomed a custodial sentence on a teenage driver who made off after a road traffic collision that injured a baby.

The 17-year-old was driving towards Middlewich after stealing alcohol from a One Stop Shop in Sandbach when his car was in collision with another vehicle.

The six months old baby girl who was a passenger in the other car received abrasions to her head.

At South Cheshire Youth Court the offender, from Goldenhill in Stoke, pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, driving without due care, failing to stop at the scene of a road traffic collision, failing to report a road traffic collision, driving without insurance and shoplifting.

He was sentenced to six months in a Young Offenders Institution.

Sergeant Penny Jones, from the Middlewich Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “This young man showed a total disregard for the law and no responsibility towards other road users.

"It was pure luck that there were not more casualties or serious injuries as a result of the manner of his driving.

"I am pleased that the court has imposed a custodial sentence.

"The court has shown that if you have been disqualified from driving, but choose to ignore the law, there is a real likelihood you will be sent to prison.”
