NANTWICH railway station has received the Cheshire Civic Community award.
The station, which is cared for by the enthusiastic Nantwich in Bloom volunteers, has been lovingly decorated with floral displays since 2007.
Speaking at the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at the station, volunteer and chairman Doug Butterill said: “We are delighted to win this award. “Each member of the group has worked tirelessly to ensure the station environment is presentable because for many people, it is their first impression of the town.
“In 2007 we obtained funds to smarten up the station and this helped us construct raised beds, which contain a mixture of shrubs, herbaceous plants and summer annuals for a splash of colour. “Hanging baskets have also been introduced on the platforms and we are grateful for the help of the Fire Brigade Cadets and Nantwich Town Council who help with watering.”
Much of the group’s success is due to the development of strong partnership links with the local councils, schools, businesses and community groups. The volunteers are also key members of the Arriva Trains Wales station adoption scheme, which encourages communities to help care for unstaffed stations.
The scheme, which was launched in 2004, has seen more than 160 stations adopted across the network with many groups emulating the high standards set by the Nantwich in Bloom volunteers.
Station Manager Shelley Hall said: “The continued success at Nantwich has demonstrated what is possible with commitment, enthusiasm and the support of partners. “We are very appreciative of the work that has been undertaken and the volunteers can be immensely proud of their achievements.”
