CREWE families have given a thumbs up to a new £5,000 children’s play area unveiled at a landmark community project.

Face painting, a magician, a hog roast and halal food were among the added attractions at the family fun day to celebrate the new playground on a field behind Derrington Avenue, Hammond Street, Walthall Street and Alton Street in Crewe.

The neighbourhood play area includes a miniature balance course with wobble boards, striding stilts, log walk and parallel ropes – as well as brightly-painted mushroom seats.

Cheshire East Mayor Margaret Simon officially launched the playground and grand opening party on Sunday April 11.

Local families were unanimous in their praise for the scheme.

Derrington Avenue resident Gwyneth Owen, who was at the launch with her young niece and nephew, Kiana and Robbie Foster, said: “Me and my family feel this project is excellent. I feel it has brought the community together to make a difference to Crewe.”

Youngster Leon Basford, of Walthall Street, said: “I’m very happy with the play equipment – it’s lovely.”

Sandra Mcrae, of Hammond Street, said: “I think the field looks great with the play equipment for the children.

“The benches, plants and shrubs really look nice – lovely to sit out and relax among.”

Ted Cross, of Walthall Street, said: “We appreciate all the hard work that’s gone into organising this project. Keep up the good work and well done.”

Residents took part in a competition to win a Fair Trade food hamper and a toys/games hamper.

The play area equipment was funded by the Criminal Justice Board. The surrounding alley gating was erected in 2008 to combat anti-social behaviour and burglaries.

Councillor Andrew Knowles said: “This official opening was a great day for the community and the play area is something children and local people as a whole can really make their own and enjoy for years to come.

“The council is fully committed to providing imaginative, healthy, sociable and inclusive active spaces that communities can take ownership of and really use – and it is great to see this one so much enjoyed and appreciated.”

The launch event was also attended by Crewe Mayor Dorothy Flude, Cheshire Police, Cheshire East’s local engagement team and Cheshire Probation Service.

Work on the playground followed Cheshire East Council’s consultation with local residents and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, to select the most suitable equipment.

The play equipment was installed last month.
