CREWE residents could earn extra money by taking in a university student.
Landlords and ladies are being sought for Manchester Metropolitan University Cheshire students after a bumper year in higher education left university accommodation full to bursting.
MMU Cheshire, now based on a single site at Crewe, took on an extra 150 students for September after record A-level results and unprecedented demand for degrees.
But the university - the third most popular in the UK - says its halls, including the 800-room Booth Hall are now oversubscribed, and is appealing to private landlords, couples or families to enter the market.
“Being a university town brings a lot of benefits and we all want visitors here to enjoy the town and to settle in,” says Claire Twaites, head of campus and residential services.
“Most students will inevitably make their own living arrangements, but we are keen to do everything we can to help them, so we are making an appeal to private residents.”
And she says Crewe residents might find taking in a student a very useful additional income of up to £60-£75 per week.
She added: “Landlords can advertise rental accommodation or lodgings in their own homes through the Student Pad website www.mmucheshirestudentpad.co.uk which is quick and easy."
The university took a record 170,000 calls on the opening day of clearing.
