ANYONE interested in what Nantwich might have looked like during the last ice age is being invited to a Rocks and Fossils walk in the town.
Cynthia Burek, professor of geoconservation at Chester University and deputy chairman of the Regionally Important Geological Sites group will be taking the free tour on Wednesday April 6.
The walk will look to shed new light on a host of local landmarks.
Professor Burek will explain, for example, why nearly all war memorials are made of Portland limestone from Dorset.
Nantwich’s brine spring and sandstone steps will also be demystified.
A collection of fossils will also be examined to see what we can learn from prehistoric animal and plant remains.
Similar town geology walks are planned across Cheshire East by RIGS.
Guy Kilminster, head of health and wellbeing at Cheshire East Council, said: “This is sure to be a fascinating walk suitable for all the family.
"Cynthia is passionate about her subject and in her words she wants to bring ‘geology to the people’.
“With the nights getting lighter it is a good opportunity to get out and explore some of the interesting local history Cheshire East has to offer.”
The Rocks and Fossils walk starts at 6.30pm at St Mary’s Church and it is due to finish at 8pm.
The walk is free but places are limited and booking a place is essential. Call 01625 383777.
