THE UK’s leading debt advice charity Consumer Credit Counselling Service has voiced its concern over the high levels of personal debt in Crewe.
New figures have revealed that Crewe residents contacting the charity for help in 2010 owed an average of £23,177 in unsecured debts – an amount higher than the national average of £19,338.
The worrying figure has been revealed by Debt View, a new map on the CCCS website that breaks down personal debt by region, area and postcode.
The map shows that 568 people from the Crewe area contacted the CCCS helpline for advice in 2010 – a rise of 34% in just two years.
Delroy Corinaldi, external affairs director at CCCS, said: “I am very concerned – not only by the high levels of debt we are seeing in Crewe, but also by the continuing squeeze on household budgets that is making it increasingly difficult for debtors to repay what they owe.
“I would urge anyone in Crewe who is worried about how to deal with their debts to seek free advice from a charity such as CCCS as early as possible.”
The charity provides free and confidential debt advice via its telephone helpline 0800 1381111 and anonymous online debt counselling at www.cccs.co.uk.
