NANTWICH Town set up a derby date with neighbours Northwich Victoria in the FA Cup after coming from behind to beat lower-ranked Ramsbottom United on Tuesday.

The Cheshire rivals will meet in the competition’s second qualifying round on Saturday week.

But Jimmy Quinn’s men almost did not make it, scoring twice in the contest’s final five minutes to turn around an interval deficit against the North West Counties League underdogs.

In-form Sean Cooke was the Dabbers’ last minute match-winner, curving a perfect free kick in off the crossbar to break Ramsbottom’s resistance.

He has now scored four goals in the past three matches.

Defender Mat Bailey, who will face one of his former clubs at the Victoria Stadium next weekend, had glanced in Matt Lowe’s cross to restore parity only three minutes earlier.

The Dabbers, despite not being at their best, deserved their third successive victory.

They trailed though when Mark Drew’s lob from distance caught out goalkeeper Jonathan Brain on ten minutes.

Ben Mills should have scored an equaliser soon afterwards, but he shot too high after Lowe’s centre had found him in a shooting space.

The Rams might have doubled their lead when Ryan Moore intercepted Darren Moss’ poor back pass, but Brain was quick to make a save.

Nantwich improved after the interval, Fraser McLachan’s shot rattling the crossbar in their first attack.

Cooke and then Bailey forced a double save from the hosts’ custodian before the former went close after beating two defenders.

Both found the net in the nick of time later on.

It caps a fine week for Nantwich, who inflicted a 3-1 defeat upon FC United of Manchester in front of a four-figures crowd at Gigg Lane last Wednesday.

The visitors scored three times in nine minutes at the start of the second half through Michael Lennon, Cook and Niall Maguire, to stun the Rebels.

Dave Chadwick’s reply proved a consolation.

Kids can watch for free when Nantwich host strugglers Stocksbridge Park Steels in the Evo-Stik NPL Premier Division this Saturday, kick off 3pm.

Accompanied U16s will not be charged if they enter the Weaver Stadium with a paying adult.

The Dabbers travel to newcomers Rushall Olympic next Tuesday, kick off 7.45pm.
