John Dwyer selected as candidate for Conservatives for crime commissioner in Cheshire
11:20am Tuesday 3rd July 2012 in News
CONSERVATIVES in Cheshire have chosen former Assistant Chief Constable, John Dwyer, as their candidate to contest the Police and Crime Commissioner elections in November.
John, aged 62, was selected by over 150 party members in Weaverham on Saturday, June 30, following a strongly competitive process.
“I am absolutely delighted to have won the confidence of so many people from across the Cheshire Force Area," said John. "It has been a rigorous and challenging process, and I am hugely grateful to those who have given me this opportunity. This new Police and Crime Commissioner role will have an impact on all residents within Cheshire and I am determined, if elected in November, to make a real difference to the lives of local people.
“Cheshire is my home and I know that it is one of safest places to live and work. The police have worked hard across the Force Area to deliver an overall reduction in crime in recent years. That doesn’t mean to say it isn’t without serious problems and I regard this new role as a great opportunity to take the improvements we have seen in tackling crime and community safety to the next level.
“I was proud to serve in the police service for thirty years and I have a strong understanding of the challenges faced within Cheshire. I believe the role of Police and Crime Commissioner will improve accountability and provide a platform to tackle waste and bureaucracy, allowing our officers to get back on the streets tackling crime.
“The Cheshire Force Area includes around 800,000 registered electors. Between now and November I will devote my time to visiting communities across Cheshire to listen and engage with local residents and to hear their concerns and priorities for their neighbourhood. I will be a strong and practical voice for all Cheshire residents.”

It is depressing but not surprising to see that the old failed political parties put have put their oars in.
If ever there was a case for an independent candidate for an office, this must be it. Let's hope that somebody comes forward.
How about a public ballot on whether Cheshire really needs this role?

According to the official info, the job holder ' will set his/her own working hours'. !!
Mr Dwyer himself says that Cheshire is already ' one of the safest places to live and work'.
How, then, is it possible to justify additional annual expenditure of probably £120k for a job that is evidently not necessary particularly at a time when cutbacks are hitting people, old and young, across Cheshire?
