A BODY discovered in Greece has been confirmed as that of missing Alsager marathon runner, John Lawton.
John’s body was discovered on Tuesday, August 14, by mountain walkers.
Mr Lawton, a member of Sandbach Striders running club, went missing while competing in the Taygetos Challenge, near the mountainous Kardamili area of southern Greece on April 8.
Searches for the 62-year-old using helicopters and sniffer dogs proved fruitless.
Volunteers from the Cheshire Search and Rescue Team worked tirelessly to locate John, and a Just Giving page set up to fund the hunt attracted over £16,000 in donations.
In a statement, his wife, Lynda Lawton, said: "I want to thank everyone involved in the search for John in the last four months.
“It has been an incredibly difficult time for the family and we will be forever grateful to those that have supported us in so many ways.
“I was married to John for 43 years. He was a very caring man, an amazing Dad to Steve and Sara and will always be the love of my life.
“I prayed that by some miracle he would be found alive, but sadly that was not to be. I am grateful that I will at least be able to bring him home.”
