Baby disco success for Leighton neonatal appeal

A BABY disco at Nantwich Football Club was the latest fundraising success for the One in Eleven Appeal.

The event, which raised £870, was organised By Caroline Lowther, who also started the Nantwich Buggy Buddies in 2011.

Buggy Buddies allows mums in Nantwich to meet up, socialise and get some fresh air with their children, while raising money for Leighton Hospital’s new neonatal unit.

Caroline was inspired to start the club after being diagnosed with obstetric cholestasis – a rare build up of acid in the bloodstream – while giving birth to her baby Isla at Leighton.

Isla is a healthy one-year-old, but Caroline’s experiences on the ward encouraged her to begin fundraising for those that are less fortunate and need after-birth care at the Crewe hospital.

Caroline said: “While I was in hospital I began talking to a young girl. She said her baby was in special care. She’d given birth early and the baby had Down’s Syndrome.

“It’d never crossed my mind that people needed this level of care and support after pregnancy. I just thought that I needed to do something to help the charity.”

Each participant of Buggy Buddies makes a £2 donation to charity.

It’s not an uncommon site in Nantwich to find up to 20 baby buggies walking beside one another as part of the regular fundraising strolls.

The next Buggy Buddies event is due for Wednesday, September 19.
