Flood warning moves to red alert in Nantwich

THE River Weaver has burst its banks in Nantwich after more than two days of heavy rain took its toll on the watercourse.

The Environment Agency (EA) issued a red alert warning for Shrewbridge Lodge yesterday.

Many areas surrounding the river are now submerged.

Steve Moore, regional director for the North West Environment Agency said: “We ask that people stay away from rivers and do not attempt to drive or walk through floodwater.”

There are now 75 warnings in place nationally; 25 in the north west.

EA teams have been working through the night to clear rivers of blockages and checking flood defences.

Anyone concerned about potential flooding should visit the Environment Agency’s website www.environment-agency.gov.uk/flood, call Floodline on 0845 988 1188 or follow the EA on twitter @EnvAgencyNW.
