A TURKISH footballer has won the opportunity to hone his footballing skills and learn English in Crewe.

Midfielder Emre Gursoy, 16, will spend the next year at Crewe Alexandra’s academy while also studying South Cheshire College’s ESOL (English for speakers of other languages) course.

He finished runner-up on ‘Futbol Prensi’ – a Turkish X-Factor style football competition – which translates as ‘Soccer Prince’.

Though he has not yet signed a contract at the Alexandra Stadium, Emre could sign on a professional basis if he impresses over the coming year.

He said: “Winning this prize and coming to Crewe means a lot to me. It’s an opportunity that millions of people can only dream of.

“I want to succeed, not only for myself but also for my family and I thank everyone at the club for their support.”

Kickworldwide – which helped to create the show’s format – will fund Emre’s accommodation, football kits and college course fees while he is in the UK.

Steve Cartwright, Kickworldwide director, said: “The prize of a year in the UK working with a professional football club is truly life-changing.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for Emre, and we wish him all the best as he aims to make a name for himself in the game.”

Paul Jones, former Bolton Wanderers centre-half who coached Emre on the show, said: “I’m delighted that Emre has won this fantastic prize ,and he can now look forward to a 12-month training development programme under the guidance of top coaches at Crewe Alexandra FC.”
