Charges don't help retailers

4:20pm Wednesday 15th May 2013

WHILE I welcome the news that Cheshire East Council has decided to slash the extortionate parking charges at Thomas Street, the authority still has a long way to go if it is to regain the confidence of independent traders and retailers in the town. The charges introduced in 2010, bordered on the draconian and did nothing to help the ailing high street with shops suffering from steadily declining footfall resulting in a more retail units going empty. Many shoppers enjoy the ambiance of a local high street but begrudge having to pay these charges and instead take their business to out of town shopping centres and retail parks where free parking is assured.

MAY I draw Wistaston residents’ attention to and encourage them to take part in the current Development Strategy Consultation. Many residents are telling me that they object to the current plethora of speculative developments on sites in the Parish. To add weight to their objections, I am asking for them to complete the online comments section at: cheshireeast.gov.uk/localplan This round of consultation, on possible alternative sites proposed by developer and land interests started on May 3 and will end on May 30.
