Tories’ vision of the future is a nightmare for young people

Official figures released this week show long-term youth unemployment in Crewe and Nantwich has almost doubled under this Tory-led Government, rising by 90.5 per cent since the beginning of this year.

That is the harsh truth of the Tories’ age of austerity, which is hitting the youngest hardest.

The current young generation is having the toughest time of any generation since the war.

The Tories have trebled tuition fees and are imposing cuts that leave little hope of a good start to working life.

The Tory theory is that the private sector would lead a recovery and replace public sector job losses, but that simply is not happening either nationally and certainly not locally.

Cheshire East Council is dogged by dither and delay.

Their failure to progress major infrastructure projects is preventing new employment opportunities coming to the area.

Completing the southern by-pass of Crewe would open up employment land at Basford for businesses employing between 8,000 and 9,000 people.

Redeveloping Crewe railway station on its existing site would provide a gateway that the town would be proud of and give businesses the confidence to invest in Crewe.

The modernisation of Crewe town centre would attract investment and jobs from major retailers and re-establish Crewe as a shopping destination.

The council claimed these were priorities for the Crewe Vision project, but it turns out the purpose of the project is for Macclesfield Tories to keep housing developments out of their backyard and dump them in Crewe, thereby increasing the town’s population significantly, with no corresponding increase in jobs.

The vision is turning into a nightmare.
