We must weigh up pros and cons before voting on a town council for Crewe

WITH reference to the yes/no vote for a Crewe Town Council; the non-partisan views expressed in this letter are mine as a resident of Crewe town and as a councillor who has been asked questions, by residents I represent, about the financial implications with regard to a town council.

I have to say that I will be voting 'no' to a town council. I prefer 'community forums', these would give residents a chance to put their concerns directly to councillors and Cheshire East Council officers.

For this and local services I believe that Crewe households would face a small charge (average estimated cost £15 p.a.), parish councils already pay similar amounts, this would be much less expensive than a town council charge (average cost estimated to be £95 p.a.). It is my understanding that Cheshire East Council would not reduce their Council Tax bills.

Consideration needs to be given to what would be the powers and responsibility's' of a possible town council and how are they likely to increase over a period of time?

What expensive to maintain assets may be signed over to it? What support staff would it need?

I am writing this letter mindful of the fact that the outcome of any vote will effect the household bills of all Crewe residents. Only this week the local press reported financial difficulties affecting many residents of the town and I understand that water rates are to rise by an average of £20 p.a. also residents in some areas of the town will be asked to pay at least £50 p.a. per house for 'residents parking'.

The outcome of the vote should depend on the public considering the pro's and con's of all options and I urge residents to email or telephone Cheshire East Council to seek further information in order to reach an informed decision.

Clr Chris Thorley, Crewe East Ward
