CREWE and Nantwich went three points clear at the top of the Cheshire Girls Football European League after edging a thrilling clash with title rivals Northwich.

A Selina O’Neil hat-trick was the saving grace for the league leaders after letting a 4-1 lead slip in a sloppy second half, with goals from Ruby Hindley, O’Neil and Mary Turley opening a comfortable 3-1 lead at the break.

The hat-trick hero was on hand to head home Sophie Brooks’ fine cross to snatch all three points.

THE under 14s crept up to third in the European League table after continuing their winning streak at the expense of second-place Northwich.

Crewe dropped a goal behind in the first half despite enjoying the lion’s share of possession.

Luckily a second-half revival was led by the fine wide play of Caitlin Finnigan and Chloe Salmon, who opened the scoring before Georgia Spibey added a fine solo effort and the impressive Leah Ellson rounded off the win by beating the offside trap.

Crewe/Nant Tigers u12 1 Halton Girls u12 4

TIGERS lost their first Champions League game of the season in emphatic style, but the one-sided scoreline tells only half the story of a game that could have ended differently.

Crewe fought back from a goal down thanks to Jessica Cottrell’s thundering finish from a fine Katie Bennett cross, but that was to be as good as it got for the Tigers as Halton added three more goals when exploiting the gaps left by Tigers’ efforts to score another goal.

Crewe/Nant Galaxy u12 2 Macclesfield Ladies u12 3

BOTH Tigers and Galaxy were at the wrong ends of results in the under 12s Champions League, as Galaxy were narrowly defeated by reigning league champions Macclesfield at Moss Lane.

Goals from Anaya Stocks and Bethany Keegean offered the hosts hope, but it was not quite enough to earn the share of the points that they probably deserved.
