Flying Lady shock defending champions Westend
7:00am Sunday 3rd March 2013 in Sport
FLYING Lady A provided the shock of the week in Crewe Open League's Winter Team Knockout competition, beating defending champions Westend LMR B 8-6.
Westend got off to a good start with darts victories from Shaun Wilkinson and Patrick Lynsky, who both won in 19 darts for a 2-0 lead.
That was until Flying Lady A began to dominate the dominoes games, with victories in the first four matches led by captain Steve Barratt, Phil Shaw and Derek and Maureen Aitken, as well as a darts win by Mick Lewis, handed them a 5-2 advantage.
LMR B responded with darts successes for Chris Gibson, Daniel Ayres and Chris Townsend to level the score at 5-5, but when Howard Barnes restored Lady’s lead with a fifth dominoes win the writing was on the wall.
Mick Lewis and Mick Whitfield combined to take the darts pairs game to give Lady a 7-5 aggregate advantage, and though Pete Ayres gave LMR some hope of winning by taking the the final dominoes singles game, Flying Lady’s pairing of Derek and Maureen Aitken were successful in a very closely contested game to reach the final.
