Crew Alexandra wait on Nathan Ellington decision
10:38am Thursday 7th March 2013 in Sport By Toby Robinson
NATHAN Ellington is likely to decide on signing a short-term deal to join Crewe over the next few days.
Alex boss Steve Davis is believed to be ready to offer the 31-year-old striker a chance to rebuild his career in South Cheshire after a month-long trial.
And with Guardian sources suggesting a contract is on the table, the ball may now be solely in the court of the former Wigan and West Brom player who was released by Ipswich on transfer deadline day.
‘The Duke’ netted his fourth goal in as many games as an over-age player in the Under 21’s 1-1 at Birmingham this week.
“I had a chat to his agent and perhaps we will come to a conclusion this week,” explained Davis.
“Obviously I have to think about the future of the club and that is our young players.
“It’s important we play them when we can but it’s important they play well when they get their chance.
“Inconsistency is the reason I have always looked around the market.
“A player of Nathan’s quality is difficult to bring into a club like ours because he’s a proven goal scorer at the top level and financially it is difficult.
“We’d have to see what he would be looking for and whether we want to do it.
“I can only judge by what I see and he has caught the eye.
“It could be a positive for the young players because they could learn from him.
“Maybe there is a deal we can do.”
