Flyers are looking good after grant supplies new kit
8:00am Monday 9th September 2013 in Sport
CREWE Flyers Swimming Club are set to look the part both in and out the pool after being awarded a charity grant for new kit.
Cheshire Community Foundation has awarded the club on Flag Lane £2,000 after boosting their membership by a quarter to around 145 swimmers in the last year.
Flyers spokesperson Dave Mears thanked Cheshire Community Foundation and is hoping the membership will top the 180 mark as the club forge closer links with local schools.
“The grant is a huge incentive to our members and from September we’re looking to recruit swimmers of all ages and abilities,” he said.
“The London Olympics and word of mouth has helped attract more swimmers to the club.
“Around half our members are under 11 and it’s estimated that 50 percent of children can’t swim when they leave primary school, so it’s important we get more involved with schools.”
The Flyers meet on Tuesday evenings and have an outstanding record of success in local and regional swimming championships.
They have become the latest organisation to be awarded the grant after the charity was set up 18 months ago to support community projects – so far more than £370,000 has been distributed through funds raised by the generosity of donors.
Chief executive of Cheshire Community Foundation Helen O’Donnell was delighted to be able to help people gain access to swimming lessons by assisting an important part of the community in Crewe Flyers.
“The vision is to make Cheshire better,” she said. “The organisations we help must be not-for-profit such as charities, community groups and social enterprises and they must be able to demonstrate a clear community benefit.
“Applicants don’t have to be registered charities and can even be part of a regional or national organisation working in Cheshire.
“As long as they can show they’re the best group to address a specific need and no local organisation can do this.”
Grants are awarded quarterly, though applications up to £1,000 are assessed monthly.
